Optical Illusions

I love reminding myself how powerful our mind is, how limited our view is, and how we see things within constructs we can’t always control.

Up or down?

The image is from the Super Mario Bros Super Show that aired in 1989.

The checker shadow illusion

Square A and square B in the illustration above are the same colour. It seems impossible but it is true.

The Penrose triangle

image

This is an impossible object that cannot exist in 3D form within a physical space.

Ponzo illusion

image

In the Ponzo illusion, both blue horizontal lines are the same length.

Hering illusion

image

The Hering illusion features two straight, vertical lines that appear to bend.

Asahi illusion of brightness

image

Look at the Asahi illusion of brightness above, and you'll probably think that the white at the center looks brighter than the white surrounding the image. However, the white is actually the same right across the image.

Which line is longer?

The Grid Fixes Itself

image

If you stare at the center of the grid, the crazy peripheries begin to fix themselves.

How Many Legs Does This Elephant Have?

image

Stare at it for a bit. You'll figure out what's going on here.

This sculpture in New Zealand almost makes you feel as if you're living in a cartoon world.

Below is an eye-popping optical illusion created by Parisian artist François Abelanet outside Paris City Hall.

This land art is an anamorphosis which is a distorted projection that comes to life when viewed at the proper angle. Stand to the side and you will see angular grass and dirt. Stand at the correct angle and the 3D image jumps out at you.

Ames window

image

On both ends is added the string and then in the air the window starts to spin. But it looks like it moves not in the circles, but only as a pendulum. The crazy part is when you attach something to it. Like pen right through it. Then starts the real craziness. Our eyes can play with us in many ways. You can make it from paper and it is really crazy.
